Is it time to Kick Sugar Out of Your Life?
Kicking sugar out of your life is probably the hardest thing you will every try, but if you decide to stop eating sugar you will be amazed at how good you look and how great you feel!
Sugar has slowly crept into almost every food that we eat and while it has made our lives much tastier, it has also made them much shorter. If you are typical, you are eating somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 of a pound of sugar every day…even if you don’t know it! If you think that much sugar might have something to do with your current weight, or your ill health, then you are in the right place!
When you eat sugar, you are putting yourself at risk for:
- Insulin Insensitivity: including Obesity, Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes.
- Cardiovascular Disease: including Clogged Arteries, Heart Attacks and Strokes.
- Mental Problems: from Depression to Alzheimer’s Disease.
- Other Diseases: Sugar consumption contributes to Arthritis, Cancer, many more illnesses.
Sugar is killing you, but it is killing you so slowly that you hardly notice. The biggest health risks you face during your lifetime are heart disease, cancer, diabetes or complications from obesity. Sugar has its sticky hand in every one of those diseases!
Imagine how powerful a change it would be if you could avoid or reduce your risk of those diseases!
Are You Addicted?
Most people laugh and will admit to being addicted to sugar, but then don’t realize just how harmful that addiction is. I compare sugar to cigarettes in my book Sugarettes because there are a lot of similarities between smoking and the sweet white stuff:
- Both sugar and cigarettes are extremely addictive.
- Both sugar and cigarettes cause slow, almost unnoticeable, damage.
- Both sugar and cigarettes are very hard to stop.
… and one more: Both sugar and cigarettes were once considered healthful (yes, people used to think that cigarettes were good for you).
It now seems crazy to think that cigarettes had health benefits, but that is what people thought. Most people today think sugar is fine to eat ( maybe it is bad for your teeth, but, otherwise it is fine). Future generations will look back at our notions of sugar and laugh, the same way we laugh when we see old advertisements for doctors recommending cigarettes.

If you have answered yes to one or more of these, then you might be addicted to sugar. |
All You Need is 30 Days
What is the best way to kick your sugar habit?
I have developed a 30 Sugar Free Days Challenge that guides you through 30 days without sugar. The Challenge comes complete with an e-book and daily e-mails that help guide you through the whole process.
Thirty days are enough for you to learn how remove sugar from your diet, especially with me sending you e-mails full of practical support and inspiration.
There is a free version of the 30 Sugar Free Days Challenge and you can click here if you are ready to start: 30 Sugar Free Days Challenge: Free Version.
Keep reading if you want more information.
Are you Interested in Weight Loss?
To be honest, I didn’t develop the 30 Sugar Free Days Challenge as a way to lose weight, but most people who want to lose weight during the 30 Day Challenge do. Since this became an important topic, I wrote a few of the e-mail updates to deal specifically with the subject of weight loss.
The best part about the 30 Sugar Free Days Challenge is that is very cheap, especially when compared to programs such as Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig (and remember, you can do it for free!). The added benefit is that when you focus on removing sugar from your diet, you are automatically living a healthier life. This means you get weight loss and health benefits and you don’t have to buy pre-packaged foods, or spend you life’s savings.
Dr. Scott Olson
Hi, I’m Dr. Scott Olson and I’m a naturopathic doctor and I want to challenge you to take a major step towards better health.
I’m challenging you to spend 30 Days without sugar or foods that act like sugar.
I have written a book on sugar addiction, called Sugarettes, that explains exactly why you cannot lose weight, why you have cravings, why you binge on certain foods, why you lose weight only to gain more back later, and why our health is destroyed by sugar and I encourage you to pick this book up as part of your program.
30 Sugar Free Days is an international program to free people from the grip that sugar has on their minds and bodies. You should eat food to match your body’s needs and a sugar-free lifestyle is just what your body needs to function at its best. You can get yourself out of the endless cycle of weight loss to weight gain to weight loss to even more weight gain and take a huge step towards a healthier, longer life.
Why am I doing this?
I think that sugar and foods that act like sugar are the greatest health tragedy of our lifetimes. Sugar is so harmful that it is robbing you of years of your life and you don’t even know it. Most people think that heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s and so many diseases are normal, when they are not. These diseases are largely the result of the choices that you make every day. Whenever you eat sugar and foods that act like sugar, you are taking steps towards those diseases in the same way a smoker takes a step towards lung cancer with every puff.
Also, I’m frankly sick of reading about fake expensive weight loss programs that take people’s money but don’t offer them any real solutions and don’t work. Weight loss is not all that hard, you just have to put the right foods in your mouth. I’m going to suggest to you throughout the 30 Days that you should focus on your health and the weight loss will just happen: no expensive plans, no meals to buy. Thirty Sugar Free Days is the plan that will take you to where you need to go.
Here are the Basics of the Plan
- Don’t eat any sugar or foods that act like sugar for 30 Days. I explain what “foods that act like sugar” are in Sugarettes and in the E-book you receive when you sign up (see below).
- Sign up for my e-mail coaching so I can help lead you through the 30 days and answer your questions, you can also read other people’s questions, and keep you up to date with what others are experiencing.
That is it!
But, while it looks simple on paper, taking away all sugar and foods that act like sugar is no small feat.
Here is everything included in the plans:
- An E-Book that will explain the program and show you all the foods you can eat and can’t eat.
- Thirty days of e-mails.
- Meal plans and recipes.
- Access to support groups focused specifically on the 30 Sugar Free Days.
- Suggested supplements to help with cravings.
- Support: I will be answering questions for people signed up for the advanced plans.
Not Just Weight Loss!
Thirty Sugar Free Days is not just a program about weight loss it is a movement towards better health. I wrote my book Sugarettes because I think that sugar and foods that act like sugar are destroying our health and yet no one is sounding the alarm.
Sugar’s effect on our health is the biggest overlooked health crisis of our time: It is almost as if everyone you see is still a smoker and, yet, no one is telling you that smoking is bad.
If you suffer from diabetes, heart disease, chronic fatigue, or any other chronic illness, than 30 Sugar Free Days is also for you.
Want to Hear What People are Saying?
I just began my third week on Sunday, and my wedding ring is loose! All my clothes are baggy and I don’t think I will ever eat sugar again! I love how you said you can feel like an “alien on planet carbohydrate” … that’s exactly how I feel! I have found some wonderful farms in my area and I’m shopping at the market less and less. Thank you so much, this is exactly what I needed!

I’ve been sugar-free for a little over 2 weeks now, and Dr. Scott was right, my cravings severely declined within the first week I would say. Now I don’t even think about sweets! That’s not to say that at this point I wouldn’t WANT something sweet
, but I have the willpower to turn it down because my cravings are no…t out of control. I’ve never gone this long without sugar or bread, I can’t believe I’ve made it this far

I’ve been low-carbing for 5 years now and feel terrific. Still, I have a sweet treat from time to time and was having a horrid problem eliminating artificial sweeteners from my diet. Your challenge inspired me – 30 days! I could do that.

No, you will need to go to this page and sign up: 30 Sugar Free Days Signup
is the meal plan simple? Or are the food fancy and hard to make? I need simple and easy if I’m going to make it happen. I have to think real.
The meal plan is simple, Chris. Feel free to stop by the Facebook group and ask your question from people going through the program.
how many grams of sugar can be in something I eat? Can I eat dressing that has 1 gram?
Chris,
Just make sure that there are no added sugars on the label. 1 gram is not much (a typical apple has around 7 grams).
Scott
Hi, I have reactions to all forms of sugar and was wanting to know if your 30 day program would help me control the sugar levels in my body and if it will help me to organise an eating plan. My reactions are getting that bad my doctor has now prescribed me a very strong antihistamine, I would like to take your 30 day program to help my body to detox. I have joined your facebook page.
Wendy,
The plan has 30 days of e-mails that helps you to understand how to quit eating sugar. There is also a booklet or Guide that can help you as well. Joining the Facebook group is a great step and I think it is what gives people the most support going through the program. We have a few people who have been on the program for months who regularly stop by and dispense their wisdom; I also check it daily.
Best of luck to you!
Scott
Thats for your reply, it seems I was on the wrong facebook page but after clicking the link below I found the right one. I don’t have a problem quiting eating sugar rather find it hard to find reciep’s that I can eat, I have been having weight problems for years and my doctor at first couldn’t work out why. A dietitian was the one who discovered my problem. Looks like I’m just gunna have to try your 30 days program and see if it helps and of course try to be proactive on the facebook site for help. Thank you once again.
Any time, good luck!
This video was posted by Christa and while she isn’t following the 30 Sugar Free Days program (she is still eating grains (which act like sugar) and using artificial sweeteners), I thought it would be helpful to see someone going through the program.
Good Luck Christa!
Dr. Scott
Dr. Scott
Can you post the link to Christa’s blog so I can comment to her?
Hi Jolene,
Christa didn’t post a link; I think you can go to YouTube and find her there??
Hi!
I am a 32-year-old male suffering with mild rosacea. This year has been particularly stressful and I have given in to my sugar addiction every day. My complexion has become dull, red and tired looking. I’m sure that sugar is a contributing factor. The thing is, I don’t want to lose weight. I’m actually looking to put on a few pounds or at least maintain my current weight. (I’m skinny.) Are there foods on the medium list that wouldn’t be so harmful on my complexion? Or should I detox with this 30 day sugar free diet first and then incorporate some other foods in moderation? Also note: I’m a pescatarian. I eat vegetables, fish and dairy. No other meat, though. Thanks so much for your insight! Can’t wait to read your book!!!!
Jamie,
I would suggest that you detox with the sugar-free program and see what it does for your skin. I would also avoid dairy foods. What you might find is that your inability to gain weight has more to do with foods that you are eating that you might be allergic to (that, in turn, make it difficult for your body to absorb enough nutrients) that how much you are eating. Yes, you can build muscle on a mostly vegetable based diet (take a look at gorillas, they have huge muscles and eat mostly vegetables).
Best of luck!
Scott
how can I join in the conversation on Facebook? How is the adrress? I can’t find it! Thanks
Erika,

Reading all of this is so inspiring but…I am fifty years old and I am one of those people who have failed at everything I have tried to get healthier or lose weight. I gave up quite a few years ago to try anything else because the failure and the weight gain was so emotionally painful. Can you say anything that I’ve never heard before that would help me???
Patty,
I’m not sure about the “never heard before” thing, but I’ll give it a try.
The way most people approach weight loss is not the way they approach learning anything else. When people try a diet, they think if they fail once, then they are done. Imagine trying to learn violin and the moment you hit a wrong note you were done and thought you could never do it again. I think you should take every dip in your progress as just that: a dip in the road to a healthier lifestyle. If you understand that it is addiction that is driving you back to foods that are high in sugar than you can be nice to yourself and understand that you will learn more as you try more.
Best of luck,
Scott
Does your plan include cutting out natural sugars found in most fruits?
I advise staying away from all high glycemic fruits; there are still some fruits you can eat. Take a look at the booklet, it will let you know which you can eat.
I need to stop sugar! I am so addicted and it’s really ruining my life. I need to have abstinence once and for all.
Dr. Scott,
What do you suggest after the 30 days? Food addiction is not just biological but very emotionally based as well. The sugar is eaten not only because our physiological self craves it but our emotional self as well. Its kind of like which came first the chicken or the egg. Is there a follow up of a lifestyle food plan? This is a multifaceted issue that needs to be targeted at all angels. Thanks!
Denise,
I agree with you completely, we eat foods for a variety of reasons. I feel that most of our food is very mood altering (sugar, chocolate, coffee, alcohol…) and that most of us try to modulate how we are feeling by the foods that we eat. I agree that it is multifaceted, but I don’t have a follow up plan that deals with those issues (maybe in the future).
Thanks for your comments!
Scott
I am mentally preparing myself for the 30 sugar free way of life, starting October 1st. I look forward to the ups and downs that my body and my brain are going to go through. This will be an interesting experience =)
I am going to start monday october 10, how are you doing on it so far?
Very interesting site , im starting the 30 day plan tomorrow , ive sometimes managed to get to 14 days but im so mad at myself as i keep going back to it , but on this site i am learning about hidden sugars so , good luck to everyone and remember when you are really craving like mad just do something .. do the dishes .. have a bath etc and the craving will leave , i think the worst we can do is just to sit around feeling sorry for ourselves .
Stephen,
Your post points out just how addicting sugar is. I suggest you take the “bicycle” approach. Whenever you are learning something new, expect that it will take some time to learn and that you might fall down a few times. Just get back up again and try again.
Best of luck!
Scott
i struggle to get rid of my stomach fat addicted also to sugar and chocolates have tried to go sugar free but go back. will i get rid of my stomach when go sugar free….thanks
Where are the online groups? I have already signed up.
The most active group is the facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/30sugarfreedays/
I started the crossfit training program around 2 months ago and the crossfit regimen highly encourages it members to eat no processed sugar or flour but rather lean proteins, carbohydrates- some fruit, mostly veggies (veggies of most kinds they exclude potatoes and such) and a fat like nuts in BALANCE at each meal/snack. Its called the Zone. It has changed the way I look at food. I used to think I was, in general, a fairly healthy eater. I included items like fish and chicken with vegetables in meals I’d make, but always had a starch like potatoes or nice and I wouldn’t think twice about sugar in moderation. I read some article about the harm processed sugar causes our bodies and was totally turned off. I just couldn’t believe how it is in most things that marketers are labeling “healthy”. I’m pretty darn committed, but I know its going to be hard. I love ice cream and chocolate and the holidays have not circled around yet and treats are always part of the holidays. Foods with sugar are ingrained into life and it can be excluding and that makes me nervous. But I’m doing it for my health.
Lisa, it sounds like you are on a great path! Good luck on the program!
Scott
Okay what should I expect the first few days on this diet? Extreme fatigue or mood swings from lack of sugar? Just curious b/c I have never attempted this diet but I am very motivated to try to see how this will benefit me.
Helen,
You should expect that you are going to experience withdrawal syndrome just as if you were detoxing from any drug. You will have extreme cravings, headaches, moodiness, irritability and a general feeling of yuckiness. Symptoms vary from person to person, but that is usually what people experience. What you will also experience (should you make it through the first few days) is more energy, better sleep, and a general feeling of wellness.
Best of luck!
Scott
Dr. Scott,
Is it possible to do this diet as a vegan? I see you included full-fat cows milk, cheese, and meats. Can I replace the meat with healthy proteins like legumes, tofu, etc. and drink soy milk instead of cows milk?
-Tenley
Tenley,
Yes, in fact I think that people should eat a much more vegetable based diet. My only caution is to watch out for soy (it can make people’s digestion upset and make losing weight hard).
WOW! This is GREAT!
Hi, I was actually placed on a sugar free diet when I came back from a trip to India, by a Doctor of Homeopathy. I never felt better in my life…..but found it hard to maintain. I am really keen to try again, but am leaving for a trip overseas in 2 weeks (my daughter and family move around). Would it be more beneficial to wait and start on my return as I am not sure whether I will be in control of what I eat in certain places, or best to start now…do my best in my travels and keep going when I get home? I would like to start now, but don’t want to set myself up for a fall.
Sue,
I agree. Start when you get back.
What about sugar free sodas and drinks?
What do I do after the 30 days?
You should stay away from sugar free sodas and drinks, they keep you craving that super-sweet taste. Here is a post on the subject: Complete Guide to Artificial Sweeteners.
As far as what you can do after the program, it is really up to you. I address this issue in the last few e-mails that you get.
Good luck!
Can I download this book to my Nook?
Gilbert,
I haven’t tried downloading it to Nook. I have tried uploading the PDF version into Kindle and that seems to work just fine. Why don’t you let me send you a free PDF version and you let me know if it works?
Scott
Hello…
I was just trying to find ‘Sugarettes’ at Barnes and Noble so I could buy it for my Nook, as well. It is not available, but I would be interested in knowing if the pdf version worked. That is the way I would ultimately like to have it.
If not, I would like to buy the book, but would like to get the emails and access to the online groups. Scott…Is that possible?
Kim,
I thought that Amazon was fulfilling all Barnes and Noble orders now. The world of electronic rights is always a bit crazy. Try ordering the complete guide as a download (it does come as a PDF and is formated to fit electronic readers). If you have any problems loading it as a PDF, let me know and I will gladly refund your money.
Let me know how it goes, I would be interested to know.
Best of luck on the program!
Scott
Ok Scott…I’ll give it a try. Thanks! Hope it works because I am looking forward to the journey!
YES….it loaded perfectly to my Nook! (Am I still getting a hard copy of Sugarettes? The email said I did, but I didn’t enter my address anywhere.
Thanks for letting me know Kim. Yes, you will get the paper copy of Sugarettes. PayPal has your address and I will be sending the book to a PO Box, if this is not correct send me an e-mail to the support e-mail address (or just click “reply” on the e-mail you did get).
Best of luck!
Hi there,
I am planning on taking the 30 sugar free plan next week. Mostly because I want to feel better. I have been dealing with sleep issues, Fybromyaliga and recently got diagnosed with Lichen Planus. I also hope it will help with my PMS symptons. One question…can I have SUGAR FREE GUM????
Thanks. Kirsten
Kirsten,
There is really no sugar reason why you couldn’t have sugar free gum, but there are many other reasons. There is some thought that artificial sweeteners may be part of the cause of fibromyaliga and eating something super-sweet like artificial gum can only keep you craving sugary things.
