The real problem it's from the government because they allow to be produced foods artificial playing with the nature, and having a bad chemical composition, with substances that will affect the body. It's true that should be done a health reform but to be effective should be done also others reforms

Makes sense on many levels. I also agree with the responder with the big companies making money off bad health. There are many studies the show the food we eat now is significantly worse off with bad indegrients, steriods, etc that make us unhealthy. You shouldn't be able to grow a chicken in 30 days that's pumped full of steriods. Anyway....i think this generation has no excuse but to stay fit.

Jonathan, I couldn't agree more with your comment. In fact, I think it is so true I've captured it as a quote in my book of favorite quotes... Nice....

Thanks for your comments! I'm not saying that it is a perfect system, but your health is in your hands (more than you might think). The simple choices we make every day: what we eat, how much we exercise... all have a big impact on our health. And it is not just me saying this: The American Diabetic Association, The American Heart Association, The American Cancer society and others all say that 80 to 90 percent of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease are avoidable through diet and lifestyle changes.

The only way to change the health care system is to make us responsible for our health. You wouldn't be denied health care, it just might cost you more if you had high blood pressure, or high cholesterol and that would be a great motivator for people to find a solution.

While I appreciate the thought and research that went into this post, I take offense to the generalities it suggests. Not all of us who suffer from these diseases - heart disease, diabetes, or "some other chronic condition" - are personally responsible for these conditions due to lifestyle habits, e.g., that we are couch potatoes, over-eaters, sloths or whatever other label you want to pin on us.

You say, "all of these parameters of health are measurable and modifiable through simple dietary changes. In addition, we give people the tools that they need to change those parameters and get healthier." If managing health were that simplistic we would all be named Methuselah. I would personally love to be able to do all the things it takes to make my body healthy - sans medications, doctor's visits, lab expenses, etc. - but that will never happen in this life. Yet you would expect me to pay extra for chronic disease that I did not bring on myself via "lazy lifestyle" [which is essentially what you are insinuating].

While it is true that lifestyle can sometimes lead to certain health conditions, it is not always the case, and to lump everyone with those chronic health conditions you stated into a "pay-for-your-sins health care plan" is smug, narrow-minded, mean-spirited and exhibits a frightening prejudice.

Yes, we need reform. But we also need a better way of approaching that reform than to suggest another type of Judgment ala Sarah Palin's "death panel".

In my mind what the medical establishment does has absolutely nothing to do with health. It's disease management through the use of toxic and dangerous chemicals and other unhealthy means. Health is the opposite of disease. To work toward true health care means to promote and support a life style that keeps you disease free. Of course, that's unacceptable because it doesn't feed the giant pharmaceuticals who control the whole health care and medical agenda in this country.
