Thanks! That makes sense. I wouldn't be eating sugar coated/roasted nuts on a sugar free diet anyway :) 9 days to go on the program and I will wait till after to try the sprouted grains recipes we would like to try. You can definately tell what the offending foods are when you add them back in (slowly and individually to start off course!). Thanks again

Kate,

I like the idea of sprouting grains before you eat them (if you are going to eat grains), but I would suggest that you avoid them during the program.

I curse my writing for putting in that "most" because I often get questions like this. "Most nuts" means all nuts that are not covered in sugar. Make sense?

Best of luck!

2 questions about permitted foods. You say that sprouts are on the OK list, but what about sprouted flour? I would love to use this, but my husband and I have been debating it. I'm for it (they are sprouts after all) he's ahainst it (sounds pretty processed...). And second you say "most" nuts. what nuts are excluded? Thanks!

Hi Melissa,

Xylitol does appear to be safe, but I think it keeps you addicted to a super-sweet taste (which goes away if you avoid all sugary things). I have an article on it, check it out: <a href="http://olsonnd.com/question-what-about-stevia-and-xylitol/" title="Question: What about Stevia and Xylitol?" rel="nofollow"></a>

Hi Scott

Is Xylitol an "act like sugar" item? I have heard good things about it, and really only one negative, which is that if you digest too much of it, it will give you an upset stomach and possibly diarrhea. I'm hoping it can be used for those times a recipe just has to have sugar.

thanks Melissa

Hi Abbey,

You didn't mention what kinds of problems you were having, but a sugar-free diet can really help with pregnancy. I would suggest that you focus on getting enough good proteins and vegetables.

Our problem with calcium is really a problem with acid base balance and taking milk really doesn't help (the countries where milk consumption is the highest are also the same countries where osteoporosis is the highest). Think about the animals with the biggest bones (giraffes, elephants, and even gorilla's); they all eat mostly greens and get enough calcium to build their bones.

Check out this post for more suggestions: <a href="http://olsonnd.com/calcium-myths/" title="Calcium Myths" rel="nofollow"></a>

Hope that helps,

Scott

I'm in my 3rd trimester with my second child. I know I haven't done as well with this pregnancy as I did with my first and know I'm addicted to sugar. I'd like to do the 30 days sugar free, but I'm concerned with the calcium intake. I don't think I can stomach full-fat milk... where do I get the extra calcium?

Hi Richard,

The reason why I suggest that people stay away from sugar AND the foods that act like sugar is because, to your body, they are the same. Having said that, I would say that there are many ways to make the program work for you. I sometimes think that dramatic changes are better than slow ones, but you know your body and what will work best for you.

Hello Dr. Scott,

Now with regards to the sugar free 30-day program, would you suggest maybe reducing your sugar intake and slowly eliminating sugary foods in advance before removing sugar completely from your diet? For example, avoiding sugary foods and sweets but still not going fully in depth with a sugar free diet; then slowly becoming sugar free by eliminating certain foods once at a time. This way you won't feel such an impact and it won't cause any sort of depression or such when you actually attempt to become sugar free.
