Keeping Sugar off the Streets

The first International Sugar Free Month is off to a great start! We have had over 400 people sign up to begin an adventure of a month without sugar or foods that act like sugar. While 400 people stopping sugar seems small, the numbers behind how much sugar they are NOT eating are incredible.

I got this idea from Angie Jones, who has a great web site: www.fitbusinesswoman.com , she was wondering just how much sugar was not being consumed as a result of the 30 Sugar Free Days Challenge.

Here are the Numbers:

Most people eat around 1/4 to 1/2 a pound of sugar every day. If you find that number to be high, check out this YouTube video I did to show how easy it is to eat that much sugar. And remember, this is just added sugar and doesn’t include the foods that act like sugar in your body.

So, to calculate how much sugar we are keeping off the streets, we will use the lower end of the calculation: 1/4 pound times 400 people = 100 pounds of sugar every day, or 3,100 pounds for the month of January. Three thousand pounds is the weight of a car, or a small elephant. That is a lot of sugar!

I have a dream of keeping a running tally of how much sugar we have all kept off the streets on my blog, sort of like the old McDonald’s sign that would proclaim how many hamburgers they sold.

The Adventure Continues

I have had so many requests for starting the 30 Sugar Free Days program later in the month or later in the year that I have created a personalized coaching system that you can sign up to anytime. Once signed up, you will receive a series of e-mails that will guide you through the whole 30 Sugar Free Days and will start whenever you want it to start.

I wanted to try the 30 days sugar free but I did a trial run of it and felt horrible. I am exclusively breastfeeding a 5 month old and when I tried to eliminate sugar from my diet, I felt weak, dizzy and lethargic. It really felt like I was going to pass out. Is this normal? Is it a bad idea to try to eliminate sugar while breastfeeding? I thought that it would be a good idea as obviously sugar is not the most nutritious thing to have in his milk but I just couldn’t make it work.

Any thoughts? Also, as a side note, I really crave bananas, sweet potatoes, etc and I have not previously even liked these foods.

    Melissa,

What you are experiencing is not that out of the ordinary, although feeling like you were going to pass out is of concern. I would slow down your transition to a sugar-free life by first eliminating all obvious sugar (soda, cookies, cakes…) and see how it goes. From there, you can move to eliminating foods that act like sugar.

If you have cravings for bananas and sweet potatoes, I would say go ahead and eat them, even though there are fairly high on the glycemic index. The most important thing is to continue to breast feed.
