hi, i am in the first week of your sugar challenge. my question to you is how do you replace the fiber that is available in foods like brown rice or noodles. As I follow your prescription, I am having a very difficult time getting enough fiber in my diet.
    Advice?

  2. Dr. Scott on April 6, 2010 at 5:13 am

    Hi!

The best place to get fiber is from vegetables and fruits. I actually suggest that as much as 90 percent of your diet should come from fruits and vegetables. If you are eating that much vegetable matter, then you will be getting enough fiber. Try adding a mixed green or baby green salad to every meal. In fact, a great weight loss strategy is to eat a large salad before every meal (fiber fills you up and keeps you from eating too much).

Why don’t you address Fluoroquinolones and the havoc they wreak on unsuspecting victims? More and more stories of the devastating effects this poison on an alarming number of people are coming out. The cat is starting to get out of the bag.

For me personally, Cipro robbed me of a year of my life and almost ended my career as a professional pianist.

I got off sugar a year ago this month and have lost 50 pounds slowly but easily, not by completely eliminating sugar from all products, but by not eating sweets, sweet sauces, etc, and severely limiting grain carbs to 1 c a day (morning cereal – low sugar). What I noticed is that I don’t seem to have a problem with eating potatoes or carrots, or the higher glyc veggies. I get a slight “buzz” from fruits, however. Is this normal? Also, I have to say after all that time, a few weeks ago I thought I’d test the boundaries and ate an energy bar (with 40g agave), which caused me to have severe emotional depression and anxiety for 2 days. That was a really GOOD reinforcement of how sugar affects the brain.

    Molly,

It sounds like you are really in tune with your body. Could I say that everyone gets a slight buzz from fruit; probably, but they don’t notice it. Sounds like you are doing really well. And, yes, sugar does crazy stuff to our brains.

I’m an active runner and all the information I’ve read about a runners diet is to get plenty of complexed carbs, I believe about 50% of your diet and to also eat bananas. I am a sugar addict and I need to find a way to cut my addiction. I am concerned that the diet recommended in the 30 day challenge will not benefit my running lifestyle. Do you have any suggestions for an active runner to get off sugar?

    Thank you!

  7. Dr. Scott on April 24, 2010 at 6:42 am

    Briel,

Runners and other athletes find that they do very well without sugar. The diet I suggest is not an Atkins-like diet, but one that focuses on eating more fruits and vegetables and these provide more than enough carbs to fuel your needs. The issue is always about length of exercise and how much glycogen you have stored. A diet rich in vegetables and fruits provides more than enough glycogen. As you may know, your glycogen will deplete after about one to two hours of exercise (depending on intensity); if you exercise this long, you might want to consider supplementing during exercise and for that I suggest that you read Thrive, by Brendan Brazier . It is a plant-based nutrition book for athletes.

I have been on your plan for a week and a half, dropped 8 lbs, and feel better than I have in years. I wondered if there is a supplement that is OK to use. I am running and wieght training 6 days a week and currently use myoplex lite. Just wondered what you thought. Thanks for changing my life.

  9. Dr. Scott on May 10, 2010 at 7:06 am

    Bob,

Glad to hear you are doing so well! Most supplements are okay to use. I took a look at Myoplex and it does contain sugar, but seems to be balanced with proteins and fats.

I have a question….i am just starting the 30 day challenge and have downloaded the e-book…my question is “can you use canned lentils, kidney beans etc if you rinse them off in water before using?
Also should i limit my milk consumption?

  11. Dr. Scott on May 19, 2010 at 4:33 am

    Charlene,

Yes, you can use any beans that you like. I suggest avoiding all dairy foods, they are very high in fat and most people cannot tolerate them.

Are there recipes I can purchase?

    Beth H

  13. Dr. Scott on July 12, 2010 at 4:28 pm

Beth, I’m sorry, there are no recipes you can purchase. I am working on a book more focused on diet that will have recipes in it. The Facebook group has posted some recipes.

Hi, I’ve recently stumbled across your challenge which is a great idea because there isn’t alot on the web about what to avoid and a supportive program. I was recently diagnosed with hypoglycemia which I believe was a reaction caused from glandula fever I recently had. My doctor has eliminated all sugar from my diet including fruit as they hold natural sugar. I’m finding it hard coming up with meal ideas without using pasta, dairy, rice and carb filled vegetables ie. potatoes. If anyone has any meal suggestions that would be great. I monitor how I feel after eating certain things and learning that sugar is hidden in the most simple things that you wouldnt consider having sugar in. Its a massive learning curve!

Amanda, I’m working on a book that has more non-grain non-dairy and non-starchy vegetables, but it won’t be out for a while. I can suggest that you take a look at this book: Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life”

Hi, I just started the program yesterday and I’ve already lost 1 pound! How much do people usually lose after the 30 days are over?

I did do the program last year, but I didn’t make it the whole 30 days, so I’m hoping this time I can do it!

Also, if you had to recommend what to eat, which fruits and vegetables would you choose? I really like peaches, but i saw that it’s in the “medium” part, not a “low and below” food, even though the list in the e-book lists it as a food you can eat! So should I just stick with the list you’ve provided or go and make sure all of the things are “low and below”?

  17. Dr. Scott on August 2, 2010 at 4:42 am

    Hi Miranda,

Glad to hear that you are giving it another try! Do your best to stick with the low and below foods, but an occasional peach should not hurt you. My favorite fruits are the berries because they are low on the glycemic index and packed full of great nutrients.

    Hi,
So today marks the 1st week, but I was wondering, if my family goes out to eat and there’s nothing sugar-free, what do I do? I tried to choose the healthiest choice, but i ended up getting a meal that included fries and I couldn’t help but eat it! Any tips?
Also, what are your opinions on sugar-free breads, sugar-free chocolate, etc. etc.? Are those allowed?

  19. Dr. Scott on August 9, 2010 at 5:02 am

    Miranda,

Congratulations on getting through the first week! I agree with you, eating out is hard. The best choices at restaurants are usually the salads with or without meat; after that, it depends on where you are eating. I can usually find something to eat, but may ask them to fix me something special, or combine a few of the side dishes together.

I’m not a big fan of sugar-free anything (as I don’t think artificial sweeteners are the answer), they tend to keep your cravings around and are not healthy. At least for the 30 days, see what you can do to stay away from all grains and sugars.

    Good luck!
