Day 3: Are You Having Withdrawal Symptoms?

3. Are You Having Withdrawal Symptoms?

How are you feeling today?

When you kick sugar out of your life, you can expect to feel very differently. Most people will experience some form of withdrawal when they stop eating sugar. These symptoms can range from a mild anxiety to full-blown withdrawal symptoms.

Here are some common withdrawal symptoms:

  • Anxiety: People experience anything from a mild anxiousness to a full-blown anxiety.
  • Feeling Shaky: Yes, you might tremble and shake depending on how addicted you are.
  • Headache: Many people experience a headache that seems very similar to a hangover.
  • Aggression: When laboratory rats have their sugar removed, the often bite their handlers; maybe you feel the same?
  • Wanting to binge: One of the cardinal signs of an addiction is the desire to binge whenever that substance is removed.

As far as dealing with symptoms of withdrawal, know that they will pass soon. If you want something that will make the withdrawal symptoms better, I usually suggest treating withdrawal symptoms like a hangover. The best supplements for a hangover are a good B-vitamin, Vitamin C, and magnesium. Most stores have some sort of hangover remedy; I like the fizzy packets from a company called Emergen-C.

NOTE: Yes, Emergen-C does contain sugar (5 grams). There is a low-sugar version if you can find it, but 5 grams of sugar is about what you would find in 1/4 of a typical apple. I don’t expect that you will be taking Emergen-C every day, so I wouldn’t worry about the sugar it contains and it should help with the withdrawal symptoms.

Today’s Task: Be good to yourself. The first few days are the hardest, not only are your cravings high, but you also feel bad. Another good way to handle the withdrawal symptoms is to sit in a sauna. Choose something to do today that will make you feel good: get a massage, go to a spa, sit in a sauna, take a nap, or take a long walk in the park or woods.

Tomorrow: We will discuss how to deal with cravings.

Hello. I’m so psyched about this plan!!! I feel a bit wobbly today and perhaps somewhat weak, but also strangely alert. There is definitely a bit of irritability here. I really could use the Sugarettes book now to keep me psyched. Have watched the documentary Forks Over Knives on Netflix which helped. I am in Canada so I don’t know if my book will arrive this week. Is there any way to download it now without having to repurchase? Can’t wait.

    Thanks so much,
    Kim.

      Kim,

The irritability goes away pretty quickly. The book sometimes goes quickly to Canada, and sometimes it takes a while. You can get an electronic version (Kindle, Apple…) online. If you want I can refund your book and you can buy one of the electronic versions, but it has already been sent.

Best of luck on the program!

      Dr. Scott
